1. Abstract

In this reflective journal I have shared my personal experience about my project which I got during my internship period. Also, I shared about the members in the project and how we divided the duties among us and how were they engaged. I also mentioned what I learned from the project.

2. Introduction

As I am student of Petrochemical and refinery Engineering. My course deals with the production of petroleum, it’s processing, refining and making products. I studied all the products made from petroleum and every aspect of it. So, in between the course, in my final year of the degree, I got a chance for internship in IOCL (Panipat) which is a well-known refinery in India. At IOCL, I was to work on a project of vacuum distillation. In vacuum distillation we were to measure physical properties of oil and gas product like viscosity, API gravity, density, which can be done by the visual inspection of the samples or physical measurements through instruments. We need special instruments to perform this project.  So, we were a team of 10 members and project was divided in the team. We were to work on this project in the span of two months. This project was very common project in oil and gas refinery. Project schedule was made by team leader

3. Personal Experience

The first thing done wrong at that time which now I feel was, giving tasks randomly to the members. Project outcomes are not defined, so team leader did not select the appropriate stakeholders which required to finish the project. We were given a list of our names followed by the duty we were to perform for the two-month internship. We were all very excited to work and give our best back then. But in that excitement and willingness to work we skipped an important aspect of project management. We did not ask for a team leader or choosing the work according to our ability which was an option we didn’t knew about.

The first stakeholder could have been the team leader. Which could have gathered the information about the knowledge of individuals and gave the tasks to those who can do it better. Are they positive about the project? What information do they have? Because vacuum distillation involves various works such as working with lab technician and other professionals to get information regarding the formation of products. Tasks like distillation, sampling, designing equipment, working on computer for compiling the data, analyzing the data is a tough job. Which require individuals to look after. Which now I understand that we required appropriate stakeholder for the task assigned with specific duties. Due to lack of communication tool, stakeholders were not engaged properly.  No person was assigned to estimate resources required for the project. So, we started the project by just working randomly on the tasks and sometimes we needed to help the other member which affected our own task.
