As many of you know the recent migrant crisis has sparked wide spread criticism all over the world and many people are not sure about what it is, so today I will enlighten you a bit more about the European Migrant Crisis.
The European migrant crisis arose through the rising number of refugees and migrants arriving in the European Union, either across the Mediterranean Sea or through Southeast Europe, and applying for asylum. They come from areas such as the Middle East, Africa and South Asia. According to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, as of October 2015, the top three nationalities of the over half a million Mediterranean Sea arrivals since the beginning of the year are Syrian, Afghan and Eritrean. Most of the refugees and migrants are adult men. The phrases "European migrant crisis" and "European refugee crisis" became widely used in April 2015, when five boats carrying almost two thousand migrants to Europe sank in the Mediterranean Sea.
These people are fleeing their country due to war and persecution, mainly in Syria, Afghanistan and Eritrea. As of October 2015, studies show that 65% of the migrants are men who hope to enter the country, find a job and settle down before reuniting with their families later. The most popular destination for these migrants is Germany. Since 2011 Germany has had over 547 000 refugees and increasing. Vice chancellor of Germany, Sigmar Gabriel, said that Germany could absorb 500 000 refugees annually for the next several years. This has left the German people with a bad view on the migrants. In the southern city of Weissach a house that was intended to be used as an asylum for the refugees was burned down. In Nauen, Germany a sports hall also intended to be used to house migrants, was destroyed. Both these cases have been speculated as attacks against migrants.
Despite all their hard efforts, many people are not supportive of the migrants. The most fa mous case being Hungarian camerawomen Petra Laszlo. She is currently facing a criminal trial after she purposefully tripped a man carrying his son which resulted in them being thrown to the ground. She also kicked a child and teenage boy in the leg after they were trying to get away. The camerawoman has since lost her job and facing trial. Both of these violent acts were caught on film.
The migrant crisis gained massive attention when the body of a young boy was found lying face-down on a beach near the Turkish resort of Bodrum. This has sparked a massive outcry from both the migrants and from the rest of the world. In the first three months of 2015, the number of new asylum applicants in the EU was 184,800, increasing by 86% if compared with the same quarter in the previous year more than half applied for asylum in Germany or Hungary.
One of the main problems that have many people talking is where these migrants are going to find jobs. In Portugal a local news network asked people what they thought of their economy. The people responded that the economy was very weak and that there are no jobs and are becoming scarce. So the question remains how a migrant in a foreign country will find a job when even locals are unemployed.
Some of the worse tragedies in 2015 include:
Two boats carrying about 500 migrants sank after leaving Zuwara in Libya on 27 August.
