UIC is a university that using all-English teaching mode. When we are in class, we speak only English; but, we speak Chinese or our own dialect after class. Although it is not easy for us to communicate, we should not speak the same language in UIC; because these can lead to a loss of diversity of language, a barrier of developing different culture, and many language teachers might lose their job.
The diversity of language will loss. In UIC, we can hear many kinds of language. English and Mandarin are the most commonly used languages. However, there are also many kinds of dialect, such as Cantonese, Taiwanese and so on. As for me, my native dialect is Teochew and I think it sounds beautiful. This semester, I study French and it gives me a different feeling of Mandarin and English. It makes me have a romantic feeling. If everyone speaks the same language in UIC, the diversity of language will lose. The expressions of different language are not same, and that is the beauty of the diversity of language.
Another reason we should not speak the same language is that it would make a barrier of developing different culture. While it seems like it would be nice to have a common language that everyone could use, language is almost always linked to culture, and different dialects of the world language would certainly develop. If everyone speaks the same language that basically encourages people to forget their roots and even part of their culture! We will not have our own identify. If everyone speaks the same language in UIC, it would make a barrier of developing different culture. Our school would be bland and everyone is same; therefore, new ideas and inventions would stagnate.
Finally, speaking the same language will make many language teachers in UIC lose their job. Now, there are many kinds of language that we can choose to learn, such as French, Japanese, Korean, German and so on. If we speak the same language, we don’t need these language teachers any more.
The fact that the diversity of language will loss and a barrier of developing different culture and that many language teachers in UIC might lose their job that it isn’t a good idea for everyone to speak the same language in UIC.
