Gentlemen of the Jury, now that you have heard what happened, we gathered the evidence and now are pretty sure who is to blame. We have a black man known as Tom Robinson accused of raping and beating Mayella. He's accused, but you and I both know he is innocent. The only thing he is to blame for is just being at her house and being a black man. The blacks don’t have any rights in this town. They’re the first to blame, the ones who will get in trouble for any action they do which we white people get uncomfortable with. But little do we know that Tom ran that night. He ran when he heard Bob Ewell’s voice from what he told us. Mayella was coming on to him when he was just trying to be a nice man and help her out with no charge. Mayella was beaten that night and Tom was accused, she had gotten a black eye on the right. But the man on trial, Tom Robinson, is crippled. His left hand has been caught in a cotton gin when he was a boy. He couldn’t have hit her. The man that gave her the black eye had to have a good left hand.

The Ewells are the town disgrace, they live like animals, they have a chance to go to school any day they want to but choose to go just one day, the first day. Mr. Ewells is a drunk and abusive. Mayella admits when Bob is drunk he hit her, but then she says he never laid a hand on her. She again was just mistaken of her mind. Tom Robinson is a man who works hard and tries to help everyone he can. Tom Robinson has been in trouble before with the law before, again it was because white people saw a man fighting him attacking him, much like the Ewells are doing now, but that doesn’t mean he’s a bad man. Tom has been a member of First Purchase since he was a boy.
Tom Robinson is a black man, Mayella Ewell is a white woman, but what they both have in common is they're both human beings,
