There is not a specific tome period for this book but it must take place back when there was kings ruling a city or town, so around the 1300's. The kingdom was called Delain and in the beginning of the story it was ruled by Roland the Good. Most of the story takes place inside this kingdom; there is only a small part of the story told outside of it.
Roland was the ruler of this kingdom in the beginning of the book and he is kind of a party animal. He drank often and when he did drink he drank a lot. One night he met a woman named Sasha. He ended up marrying her and having two kids, Peter and Thomas. Peter was born about 5 or 6 years before Thomas was. A king usually only has one kid so when he passes on the one child will take over as king, but since Thomas was born he was frowned upon. Even his own dad didn't like him as much as peter. Sasha dies bringing forth Thomas. Tom was always jealous of peter and really didn't like him much. The king had an advisor and also he was his magician, this mans name was Flagg. He was evil and wanted to corrupt the kingdom. He had eventually put a poison in Rolands wine that peter took to him every night. He put a substance called Dragon Sand in it. What it does is it melts your interior organs and sets you ablaze until you are completely melted. When Roland died it had made it look like peter had killed him, because Flagg planted the remaining sand in peters room and since peter took him wine every night then it looked like peter had done it. So peter was imprisoned in the needle, the highest point in the castle which is a cell, for the rest of his life. Tom took over as king and Flagg stayed around to convince tom to do bad things and make the kingdom corrupt. Peter had eventually developed a rope with the threads of the napkins he got every day. He took 5 threads from each napkin and got 3 napkins each day. It took him about 5 years to get a rope long enough and to escape. When he escaped tom had admitted to witnessing his father being killed and knowing about the poison, very very long story. They go after Flagg and end up killing him. Peter takes back over and tom heads south for a journey. The part I found most interesting would have to be when peter was being convicted of killing his father, because it had me on my toes and not want to put the book down.
Peter is the main character in this story. He is one of the easiest people to get along with. He is friendly and easy going. He never quits and he is strong, he is very tall and also he is a handsome person. Peter gets his looks from his mom. Another important character in this book is Flagg. He is very smart and knows many spells. Flagg is about seven hundred years old, even though he still looks about in his early thirties. He knows when people are talking about them and he is also very evil. He will leave a kingdom after he corrupts it and leaves to where
