The Crusades

As I read this article, I couldn’t get over that religion played a huge roll in the crusades. Religion is supposed to be a moral guide for you. I can’t even fathom how you could connect these brutal massacres, with religion. What part of “wading through the cities holy sites knee deep in blood” sounds ethically correct? What part of anything they did was morally correct? What it sounds like to me is

The reason they were so successful was their passion for fighting. If they could have taken this passion, and directed it toward something other than war, they could have done great things. This is similar to what people think Hitler could have done if he channeled his energy to something good.

My reaction on George Bush’s statement about the war on terrorism being a crusade is that I understand how the Muslims feel. What if a German politician said he was going to conduct a holocaust? What these Muslims had to go threw is shocking. I hope that George Bush apologized for his mistake, because that put fear in a whole culture of people.

When I heard that held onto the idea that they had many motivations, none of which being religion. To me this is foolish not to think, but I can see why one wouldn’t want to think that way. It is an embarrassment to religion, to say that it was the motive behind mass murders. Pope Urban II was quoted saying that as you go fight, “do the work of god”, and god would lead you. It is sad that you can take something as religion and turn it into a bribe to go fight. I would like to think that a Pope would want peace before war. It is a total 180 from the dark ages, where the church declared times of peace, and tried to end feudal war.
