In Fallen Angels, Wong takes all of his stylistic signatures to the extremes. He pours in some slo-mo, in order to pull the audience in and out of the plot. It also helps put us in the head of the individual, and how they are separated from reality. There were also pixelated action scene. I thought the pixelated action scenes made it seem less real, and made it kind of removed from reality. But I think that it is also used to draw the audience away from the environment, and make them focus on the individual. It is also used to mask the clarity because if you’re in a situation where people are shooting at you, it's highly unlikely you’ll remember everything around you.
Neon lighting help make the scene. During this film the the neon lighting helped pull me into a live environment, even though there weren't a lot of people in the movie. The neon was also mixed with empty streets, and I thought of it as a vision of self isolation. Kind of like there should be people but you don’t see them (people are invisible based on the individual's perspective).
One of the other things that makes the movie interesting is the lack of dialogue. The only dialogue you get is really from the supporting roles. Most of our information comes from a voice over. This makes the movie feel like a dream because it’s your separated from reality, this is also helped by the slo-mo and the pixelation. Since the main characters express their emotions through narration, this movie can also be seen as a look back on the future. I think that this movie makes more sense as a look back.
This film utilizes youthful stylistic cheekiness. This film also utilizes crisscrossing plots through the entire movie. It kind of reminds me of Slaughterhouse Five by Kurt Vonnegut. In Slaughterhouse Five your are constantly jumping around through time and are try to create an overview of a time line. This movie is similar to this because you’re looking through the movie
