Fashions Of The Sixties Ð'- A Guide For Costumes

Women

Early 60's - Dresses were worn at knee length. The "Jackie Kennedy Look" was very popular. It included sleeveless A-line dresses, short boxy jackets with Ð'Ñ* length sleeves, slim skirts, pillbox hats, white gloves, and large sunglasses. Hair was worn in bouffant styles.

Mid 60's - Dresses and skirts were worn about 4 inches above the knee. Fabrics were brightly colored and black and white optical art patterns were popular. Short white go-go boots, shoes, and lace-up boots had very low heels and were often worn with boldly colored or patterned tights. Accessories included big clunky plastic jewelry, big gaudy rings, and large caps.

Late 60's - Women wore micro-mini dresses and skirts, hot pants, and bell bottom pants with chunky heeled shoes or knee high go-go boots. Fabrics were printed with flowers or wild patterns in bold psychedelic colors. "The Hippie Look" was very popular. It included bell-bottom jeans, peasant skirts, flouncy shirts, fringed vests, sandals, love beads, huge sunglasses, bandanas, and headbands. Hair was worn long, in braids, or in afros.

Men

Early 60's - Men mainly wore single breasted suits in conservative colors with narrow collared shirts and thin ties. Suits were tight fitting, with short tailored jackets that had narrow lapels and narrow bottom pants hemmed short. Men wore their hair very short or in a crew cut.

Mid 60's - Men often wore skinny suits, many in bright colors. Casual wear included turtlenecks, stovepipe pants, and polyester sport coats. Winkle picker shoes and chelsea boots (Beatle boots) were fashionable. Men's hair became longer and wider but was still slicked back with oil and gel. Beards and moustaches
