Fault In Our Stars Book Report
Task #1:
Personification: The attribution of personal nature or human characteristics, to something non-human, or the representation of an abstract quality in human form.
“We bottled the stars this evening, my young friends” (Chapter 11 Page 163).
This quote from Chapter 11 is personification because no one and physically bottle up stars, it’s impossible. In this section of the story Augustus and Hazel are out on a date in Amsterdam, they ordered a bottle of champagne and the waiter referred to the champagne as stars because it was so magical and delicious.
Hyperbole: exaggerated statements or claims not meant to be taken seriously.
“I screamed to wake up my parents and they burst into my room, but there was nothing to do to dim the supernova exploding inside my brain, an endless chain of intracranial firecrackers” (Chapter 7 Page 105).
This example is a form of hyperbole because Hazel was in so much pain that it felt like something was exploding in her head. This is an over exaggeration of her pain.
Hyperbole: Exaggerated statements or claims not meant to be taken seriously
“You will live forever in our hearts, big man” (Chapter 21 Page 264).
This is an over exaggeration of how everyone felt when Augustus Waters passed away. Everyone loved him so much and they did not want to affect the fact that he has passed away.
Foreshadowing: a warning or indication of a future event.
“ Because it's my life, mom it belongs to me” (Chapter 10 Page 1390.
This is an example of foreshadowing because it's letting the readers know that there is something that is wrong with Augustus and know one knows what he is yelling at his mom about.
Theme: the subject of a talk , a piece of writing, or a person's thoughts.
“There is only one in this worls shitter then biting it from cancer from cancer when you're sixteen, and that's having a kid that bites it from cancer.” (Chapter 1 Page 28).
This is a theme from the book because the whole book is about how these teenagers battled from cancer and such a young age.
