"I am Sam"
The movie "I am Sam" is written by Kristine Johnson and directed by Jessie Nelson. Sean Penn portrays the role of "Sam," a mentally-retarded man with autistic tendencies who earns a living by working as a janitor at a local Starbucks. Dakota Fanning, stars as Sam's daughter named Lucy who was taken away from her father by the Department of Child Services believing that Sam cannot effectively care for her. Michelle Pfeiffer serves as a high profile lawyer who represented Sam's case for pro bono in trying to win custody for Lucy. The heartwarming film "I am Sam" is a story about love between a father and a daughter who struggles to overcome all the challenges they go through to stay together. The plot began when a social worker discovers the situation of Sam with his daughter and the Department of Child Services decided to put Lucy in a foster care. Sam being a single parent has developed unconditional love for Lucy felt that he must find a lawyer to win the case. Even if it seems to be impossible to win the case, Sam vows to fight the legal system and find a lawyer to represent him.
As the film progresses, Sam proves how he is willing to do everything just to get back his daughter. He bothers Rita Harrison almost everyday to convince her to represent his case. When Rita Harrison finally agreed to take his case for pro bono, it signifies how she was touched by Sam's dedication to be with his daughter again. Eventually, Sam helps Rita more than her legal skills could ever help her, as he changes her outlook on life. Sam's determination to be a father at all costs, and against all odds inspires Rita to be a better parent and a better person. Rita, who is too caught up in her professional life to be an adequate mother to her own son, develops a special relationship with Sam and the two learn and draw strength from each other.
The characterization that strengthens Sam and Rita further elaborates how love can touch other people's lives. Together they worked on convincing the Department of Child Services that Sam deserves to get hi daughter back which later on establishes a bond that results in an exceptional testament to the power of unconditional love.
Despite the fact the foster care limits the days and hours of visit for Lucy to see his father, she makes sure that every time they see each other were well spent.
