G-4 Project : Hairspray
PHYSICS- How ethanol present in Hairspray has adverse effects on hair strands in terms of tensile strength.
Materials required- Clamp stand, 5 different hairsprays of different holding power, 12 strands of hair from the same person, of length 10 cm and 5 cm, and 1N weights
Procedure-
- Place clamp stand on the table and make sure it is firlmp placed on table and doesn’t move
- Attach hair strand to standing clamp securely by using tape to fix it in place. Start with the 5cm length and then the 10 cm length
- Taking one pair of strands as control, attach one by one 1N weights on the hair strand by creating a loop, continue this till the strand breaks and record the weight at which the hair strands broke.
- Now take a new pair of hair strands, and add 1 coat of hairspray in all directions and then attach to the clap stand. Repeat step 3, and continue this till all 6 values for all hairsprays+ the control are recorded.
- Make a table recording results
Sample | Breaking point (N)with 5cm hair | Breaking point (N) with 10cm hair |
No hairspray(control) | 60 | 80 |
Sample A | 40 | 60 |
Sample B | 20 | 50 |
Sample C | 40 | 70 |
Sample D | 30 | 50 |
