Prepare a work plan on how you can develop or enhance your self-leadership by using the 5 elements of self-leadership
I work as a home-based educator at 51Talk. 51Talk is the fastest growing online English Language Teaching (ELT) platform in China and the Philippines. 51Talk was established in China in 2011. Since 2012, it has been operating in the Philippines, creating thousands of jobs for home-based teachers. These teachers work from various parts of the Philippines.
As a home-based educator who is specializing in teaching kids my duties consist of preparing lesson plans, making lesson memos, preparing teaching materials, finding out ways how to deal with different kinds of kids. As it is, the job sounds pretty easy, attend online seminars or trainings, enter the class early, teach basic and conversational English, post the lesson memo, proceed to the next lesson. But dealing with kids is not an easy job every kid is different and they have different learning styles with which I have to tailor my teaching style with each individual.
I am my own boss in this job; I don’t necessarily report to a higher manager we only have coaches and lesson support teams to help us if there is an emergency that will arise and cause me to be absent, salary concerns and lesson concerns. The job can be tiring from technical issues of 51Talk’s software, internet issues, and sudden power interruptions. Of course teaching kids can drain all of my energy at the end of the day as well. So to be able to maintain motivated and stay within this job and pursue my master’s education I have to find ways to look at the brighter side. Here is my work plan on how to enhance my self-leadership ability/skill:
Goals | Leadership Development Activity | Timeline | |
Personal Goal Setting | >Be healthier (Physically, mentally, and emotionally) >Be an early bird >Be more grateful >Be more optimistic/positive about the job >Be more efficient and effective in teaching >Balance work and life. >Save money. >Stop overthinking | > Eat more fruits and green leafy vegetables, avoid too much sweets > Exercise at least 30 minutes – 1 hour daily (Running, Walking, Sit ups) > Wake up early at around 6 or 7 AM > Plan ahead of time of the tasks at work and assignments that need to be done. > Open more slots to earn more > Keep a part of my salary aside and start saving my coins. > Reflect and pray | Practice within 1-3 months and continuously do it. |
Constructive Thought Patterns | >To stop undermining myself >To be more positive about what I can do. >To start trusting and believing myself in what I can achieve such as becoming a home-based trainer. >To be able to practice the art of planning ahead of time. | > Engage in positive self-talk to create a “can-do” belief >Psych myself up before an important event such as training for a higher position >Practice looking in the mirror and telling myself “I can do it” instead of overthinking about bad things that could happen. > Plan lessons ahead of time instead of doing them before classes > Read in advance for master’s classes and do home works and requirements ahead of time. > Since I am a junior teacher I should think about the rewards I would get for perfect attendance and I would get for moving up to being a senior teacher. > Practice how to deliver lessons to different types of kids and how to successfully manage an unruly, stubborn or distracted kid. | Practice within 1-3 months and continuously do it. |
Designing Natural Rewards | >To make the job more motivating and fun. | >Re-design my work station. >Use more realia instead of showing just pictures from the iPad. *Realia - In education, realia are objects from real life used in classroom instruction by educators to improve students' understanding of other cultures and real life situations. | - Within a week for the re-designing of work station - For realia continuously do it in every class it is applicable. |
Self-monitoring | >Keep track of my improvements. | >Check student feedback every day to see and prove if I am making my students happier and looking forward with all of our classes together and work on what needs to be improved. *Each 51Talk teacher has what we call “MyPage” where we can see all student feedbacks, service score, manage our schedule, do lesson memos, check promotion status, and monitor our salary. | *I have been doing it, just continue. |
Self-reinforcement | >To reward myself after successfully teaching an unruly/stubborn/distracted kid. >To reward myself for finishing one cut-off without absences >To reward myself after completing a difficult project or homework / to reward myself after a difficult exam. | >Congratulate myself for being patient. >Eat some chocolates or cake. >Take 2-3 days off from having 2 week continuous classes (at 51Talk) and watch a movie/read a book. >Treat myself to a restaurant or buy my favorite food. | *I have been doing it, just continue. |
