Cancer Schmancer
By: Fran Drescher
2002
Plot:
Fran Drescher, most famous for her loud, nasal voice and her role on the 1990s TV series The Nanny shares her experience with uterine cancer in this book. In the book which serves as an follow-up to her memoir written in 1995, Enter Whining the she describes living with symptoms for more than two years while going from doctor to doctor with no a diagnosis. She also devotes an entire chapter to the loss of her dog, Chester. Consistently open with her emotional ups and downs, she addresses important issues such as stress and sex. In this book her storytelling skills and humor make this book a good read. Although she sometimes lapses into therapy-speak, tracing everything back to childhood, her one-liners can be priceless.
Quotes:
"Every time you go to the doctor and get a good report, the odds keep staking more in your favor."
-She is talking about her doctor reports. She received so many in this book that she had a new doctor report every week.
"Think peace."
-She defiantly had to at this time in her life. She went through a divorce and the death of her beloved dog, Chester, in less than a three year period. Her way to keep personal peace in the book was through humor.
Personal Opinion:
I loved this book. It was entertaining and definitely funny. It was refreshing to read a book about a cancer patient that had some light sides and that didn't end in death. Fran Dreschers humor and realistic points of life make her such a personal character. She seems like such down-to-earth person
