Last Friday, May 25th, Gary Hung, area marketing director of OA pain, was invited to share his stories of career development and some advice to on-job Consumer Health Future Leadership Program (FLP) members of mainland China. The FLP monthly sharing meeting started since October 2017. The responsibility of speakers is to provide business induction, share business updates as well as share his own stories of career development with all FLP members. Meanwhile, FLP members understand framework of the company and learn how to get used to the new role.
Cary Hung talked about his career development before GSK as opening of meeting. He joined Unilever group as his first job position after graduation. Then, he worked for KFC, Diageo, and Samsung, managing over 20 categories or so-called 30 brands. Among those experiences, Cary Hung set the strategy with local market driven model or global market driven model. After joining GSK, he gained a position in oral categories. In 2016, Cary Hung was appointed as member of Pain Relief SEA Group, then he was appointed as an Area Marketing Director of Pain Relief GC until now. “The reason why I could get offers from different kinds of companies, since I hold broad eye-sighting and diverse skills.”[pic 1]
“I was working on specific category no more than 3 years” said Cary Hung, “Be familiar with the category through the first year, deliver the performance during the second year and examine your performance at the third year. Meanwhile the company would recognize whether you achieved your performance based on your strategy or not, and then consider appointing you to other categories.” Cary Hung encouraged FLP members that seeking challenge is important in the career development. After working in oral category for 4 years, Cary Hung had to make a decision whether he could promote up to global oral marketing team or he started in pain relief marketing which he had never tried before. “So here is the reason. Although my next promotion is a position in oral global team, I have co-worked with them with all process as oral local team. I really want some new challenges in my career,” said Cary Hung, “Finally, I decided to join pain relief SEA team, since I have never ever worked in market of South East Asia, and also there might be something I could learn and think of it.” [pic 2]
