Humanity consists of two wings: male and the female. As long as these two wings are imbalance and in equivalent in strength, the bird will not fly. The persistent denial of equality in our world is a milestone to human dignity. Violence against women is universal and has been described as the most pervasive, yet least recognized human rights abuse in the world. Women suffer physical, sexual, financial or psychological abuse at some point in their lives, almost always at the hands of male relative, especially those of developing countries .Rape cases are on the increase despite public awareness campaigns on the vice. Women and girls are victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, incest, and gang rapes. If what we are witnessing is anything to go by, something has gone wrong with men. The barbaric treatment being meted out on women everyday by some men needs an urgent action by the government. We have seen women being stripped naked under the pretext that they are wearing tight provoking trousers. Many have been raped while others treated indecently by men. Many children have been victims of rape and defilement.
According to African tradition, women were regarded as cooks and house workers. Their work was to look after the children and does the entire house work. They were not allowed to own any property. If a woman falls in love, has extramarital relationships, seeks a divorce, or chose her own husband, she is seen as transgressing the social sanctioned boundaries of her community. This might result to threats or withdrawal of family benefits. In extreme cases she or her chosen partner can be subjected to horrific violence by members of the family and or the community.
