Genetics are important in our life, but not to the point where DNA screening should become a fundamental of life. Future read outs to would-be parents would cause discrimination. People here, in the present, are discriminated against for little petty things. Imagine if everyone knew every problem, every illness, and every trait that a child would have. Future read outs would be the foundation of discrimination, in the future. Discrimination is the treatment or consideration based on class or category rather than individual merit. Although the movie was fictional Vincent was denied of all of his dreams. He was denied the dreams he had, before he had time to fully develop them, which was harsh and cruel. The problem was he was only 99% sure to have a heart problem somewhere in life. However, there was still that one percent chance that he would survive free of heart problems, so why couldn't he live the dreams. Why did he have to change to be someone that he really wasn't? The read outs could be good in some ways. For example, if the would-be parents were only doing the scanning for fun, like an ultrasound, not trying to find what's wrong with the fetus and why?
As we grow older, we do select environments well suited to our natures. In the movie, Vincent's brother was more the serious type who always right or ahead ( when they were kids). When he was older, he ended up being a detective. This did not surprise me at all. Also in the movie, Vincent wanted to be an astronaut, but he knew because of his heart problem that he would never be able to. When Vincent grew older he did become an astronaut. He wasn't himself, but he still selected environment well suited to his nature. People would be more comfortable around environments of their own nature, rather than a random environment. For example, when I grow older I rather be in place where it seems like home to me. It has to remind me of the past in some way.
