Love in Gilgamesh
The story of Gilgamesh is an epic that is full of love. This is a story of a man who is feared, loved, hated and just a man who lives life. The journey that Gilgamesh takes is larger than life but like always ends in tragic death.
Gilgamesh was a very powerful man with great power. There was no other man as strong as him so he was very boasted about his power and glory. He was both loved and hated in his city. His arrogance also came with his abuse of power which pushed the city of Uruk into rage. Gilgamesh would sleep with every bride prior to marriage just to be the first to sleep with them. The first sign of change from Gilgamesh came when Enkidu was born. Right from the start, there was a link between the two of them. Ninsun told Gilgamesh, "You will love him as a woman and he will never forsake you". After the two of them met, they hit it off.
Gilgamesh finally met his friend and companion. At this point in the story I think the two men a bisexual. Gilgamesh began to chage his selfish ways after meeting his companion. He liked the luxury of kindness with him. Even though Gilgamesh was this powerful man with great pride, he found a place in his heart for Enkidu. The relationship between the two men seems to be gay. The story is confusing with their relationship because at the beginning they both slept with women.
The death of Enkidu really changed Gilgamesh. The loss of his companion really hurt him. Even though he was so strong and powerful he felt as if something in his life was missing. He cried for seven days and nights over his death, thinking that his friend would come back. This is the part of the story where u can see how close the two of them actually was. To me he cried over Enkidu as if he was his wife. The loss of Enkidu had him confused and scared but the despair in his heart didn't not let him rest. Gilgamesh tries to find immortality
