Situation Analysis and Problem Statement: Global Communications

The business industry is a competitive world; unremitting changes in technology and business operations are always morphing to stay in business. Management is a key component in the implementation of these changes of survival. All companies are in the business of staying in business. This paper will review Global Communications a telecommunication industry who is in the process of reorganization their current operational plan which includes new services and location. A review of the stakeholders involved and the ethical dilemmas that have arisen. A problem statement will be developed along with an end vision statement.

Describe the Situation

Issue and Opportunity Identification

Global Communications is part of the telecommunication industry that has been having difficulty holding shock value. The leadership team at Global Communications has developed an aggressive approach to rescind this downfall they have fallen upon. The management taskforce has acknowledged areas for enhancement. Global Communications will augment a selection of new services that will attract additional consumers and small business customers. Management has created a plan to expand the local and long-distance markets, develop an alliance with a satellite provider and wireless provider to offer broadband, video service, and anytime access to the internet using wireless telephones or PC cards. The second approach of this team was to identify cost savings measures and to maximize marketing efforts more aggressively on the international level.

Stakeholder Perspectives/Ethical Dilemmas

The identified stakeholders for the reviewed scenario include Global communications, employees, and the union. Each stakeholders perspective needs to be taken into account and addressed, if this step does not take place pure chaos will take over Global Communications and the company may not survive the new changes. Throughout the scenario all ethical values such as integrity, loyalty, courage, honesty, fairness, and responsibility were addressed. A few of the ethical values were demonstrated (Table 2) by the company wanting to be honest with the employees about the survival of the company based on the imposed changes. Fairness was demonstrated by consideration of the pay drop that some employees would take, but then an implementation of a retention bonus.

Frame the "Right" Problem

According to the University of Phoenix Week overview (2006) framing the right problem is most difficult and the most critical step in problem-solving. Even with the comprehensive problem-solving process there may not effectively solve the problem or realize potential opportunities. If the right problem or opportunity can not been identified, the best solutions cannot be identified. And if the problem is not identified in a way that enables one to identify a solution, the problem can not be resolved. The following problem statement has been developed from the Global Communication scenario: Global Communications will become a global leader in communications by use of accessible technology, offering best services, creating strategic partnerships, effectively managing it strategic transition, creating a win-win strategy to manage its workers, and expanding globally.

Describe the "End-State" Vision

A vision statement gives a broad, inspirational image of the future goals a company is aiming to achieve. As discussed in Long and Vickers-Koch (1994) a vision statement is difficult to create and takes time. After reviewing the Global Communication scenario and the values and goals that the stakeholders share the Global Communication End-State Vision might read: "To fulfill all telecommunication needs to all small business and consumer customers globally." After implementing the aggressive approach that the management team has initiated our vision statement should reflect that outcome.

Benchmarking Topics

Now that the opportunity statements have been recognized, the following benchmarking areas can be explored to see what has and has not worked for other companies:

1. Strategic Partnering for Regaining Market Share

It is the curse of our consumerist culture--or a blessing if you're a manufacturer or advertiser. Being able to predict consumer trends has led to leadership in industries, and is "a blessing if you're a manufacturer or advertiser." (New Scientist, 2006) Part of the problem that Global Communications has experienced is a lack of understanding of what the consumer and small business owner requires in communications. Unexpected competitors have emerged from other industries which have taken a large market share. Understanding which partnerships will bring the greatest gain will be a critical factor in regaining market share.

2. Negotiating With Strategic Partners

Global Communications is at a disadvantage since it has lost such a large market share. When negotiating with strategic partners, it is critical to understand which services are the most vital and which are not. This will require a great deal of foresight to anticipate potential customer needs and want, and to partner accordingly.

3. Negotiating with the Workers Union for a Win-Win Situation

Global Communications needs its skilled workers to progress. Making positive steps to keep workers engaged and committed to keeping the company profitable will be vital in Global Communications ultimate success. Strategies of negotiation will need to be developed so that both parties are win-win.

4. Strategic transitioning into a global market

Global Communications will need assistance as it penetrates into international markets. Existing international leaders will need to be competitively challenged. Skilled workers will need to be recruited, and marketing will play a key role in product visibility.

5. Worker management/strategic partnerships/international expansion

Global Communications will need to tackle many obstacles in its quest to become a global presence. Technologies
