The major theme of 21st century is global economic integration. With the accelerated globalization economic process and increased on kind of completion, there is a growing realization that project management is importance to company or organization. Project management can less the blindness, cost and loss of project. However, even there are lots of benefits to introduce project management philosophy in most companies. The implementing of project management is face challenge to do it that is kinds of resistances in companies. In fact, the most of resistances of implementing project management are come from the stakeholders of company like manager, employee, company owner etc. There are several different of resistances maybe occur in the company.
The first kinds of resistances are come from the lack of knowledge of a new system or process (Burns 2011). It’s also related to poor communication. When there is lack of knowledge of project management, every stakeholders of company are feeling anxiety and uneasy (Lisalisatong 2011). Because they do not know what actually project management doing. The futures become uncertain and unpredicted. People begin to speculate and make bad thinking in common way. When those views sell to others, it’s always cause resistance to change in the company. The employees are fear the change in the company. In most situations, they were at first grudgingly and later passively accepted. If this happens, we cannot expect employees to work efficiently. The lack of knowledge of project management also result resistance of mangers and customers. For example, when a project manger work in a company which the management are lack of knowledge of project management, the management are worry about the project manager spend too much time “managing” and not enough time “doing” (Mochal 2002). It’s also kind of similar to customer. When the project manger takes time to create project definition document, the client ask manger why they were wasting time to doing it. They think the tradition method before the manger change process is good enough to them. The clients have no knowledge about project management. They cannot predicate the future of their project. The most of people do not like unknown and take risk of it.
The second kinds of resistances are come from many powerful vested interests. They are fear of losing power (Burns 2011). The change of management process result change of exist management system. Fro example, the traditional management is function management in most company, when a company is applying project management result some independent project teams in organization. Those independent project teams collect fund and staff from the function departments (Human resource department, Marketing department, Finance department etc.). Therefore, the implementation of project management will cause “culture shock” where functional managers will have to surrender some or all of their authority to the project managers. As a result, they will comment the implementation of project management like: “We don’t need it.” “It doesn’t apply to our business.” “Let’s leave well enough alone” (Kerzner 2001 p.49). For the company owner whose company is implementing project management is also losing the power. When they bulled project team, this means company put enough resource for some projects after good planning. The project manager does not need to ask the authority of owner. As there is no one wants to lose his or her power, the resistance exists. They are resisting supporting this change, because the new methodology will result in a shift in the established power and authority relationships (Kerzner 2001 p.71).
The third kinds of resistances are come from the cost of implementation. The change mentioned above in company result a change of management process. The most members of company face a new position in the company. They need learn the new skill, which suitable with project management. In other words, they need spend a lot of their time to learn some knowledge and they can do work with old method. However, they pay a lot of attention in the past knowledge and now they need pay attention again. From the angle of management, if they are not expert in the project management, they need hire the consultant of management to training the company members. This cost of money is a large amount in some companies. Also the company member are used to use old method to doing work, when company implementing a new management method project management, it can cause some loss with unaccustomed. When company combines the implementation cost together, maybe they are deterred by this cost. Because they do not trust that the change of management process will successful one hundred percent.
