The Grandmothers' Journey

I believe that it does not matter whether or not the grandson is alive. The grandmothers' journey is what truly matters. The journey to the doctors' office is what gives her a meaning to live. Throughout her journey the author repeatedly implies her perseverance. In the beginning she is yelling at the animals to get out of her way and not to bother her because she is on her way to town. This shows that she her has mind set on getting to the town no matter what. Another example is when she fell down and could not get back up until the man helped her. This shows that she is a very old and frail woman and the fact that she is venturing out to town by herself shows that she will continue to go no matter what. Her having this mindset gives her a reason to get by day by day. Her grandson needs his medicine and that feeling of being needed gives a purpose to life. I know this from personal accounts with my grandparents.

Just the other day I had a fever of 102 degrees and the nurses made me go home. My mother couldn't answer her phone because she was at work so they called my grandma, on my mothers' side. I felt really bad that they were calling her out of work to come get me and kept apologizing when I got into the car. She kept reassuring me that it was no problem because she liked being needed. I got quiet and she went into further explanation, "As I have gotten older my kids don't need me as they used to when they were younger. I like the feeling of being needed again Sami," she said. Another personal example is that my grandparents on my dads' side of the family own 19 acres of land. Although he doesn't have anymore animals to take care of, he still takes perfect care of his land.
