Argumentative Research Essay

3/20/17

                            Why Gun Control shouldn’t exist

Gun control is a controversial issue across America. Many could argue that guns cause more harm than safety, while others might argue that guns are the only way to protect oneself. Having gun ownership controlled by the government takes a large amount of freedom away from the citizens of America. The 2nd amendment holds the right to bear arms. Those who own a gun shall not be infringe the law.

Those supporting gun control say that making ownership of guns more difficult would deter crime, yet there is proof that makes that assumption false. Chicago has the strictest gun laws in the entire country. With gun control being so high in this state, crime rate should be down. “The city has logged more than 700 homicides this year, more than any other major U.S. city” (Bryan). Gun control is not going to stop violence, it is only going to make it harder on those who want to use guns to protect themselves, and people around them, to do so. Chicago should have one of the lowest gun related crime rates, yet they have the highest gun related crimes in the country. According to Miles Bryan, in Chicago, the police are only able to clear 25% of all killings. To those that believe that guns should only lie within the hands of police, where are the police when all of these murders are occurring?

I strongly oppose gun control. My opinion is that those who are most likely to use a gun illegally will do it with or without permission from the law. Those who actually have a gun permit, or a concealed carry license should be allowed to bring a gun with them wherever they go. I believe it is a right to be able to carry if you have a background check, and go through the process of getting a gun permit. Creating a safe zone doesn’t stop crime. Having an area that is known to the public as a “safe zone” could potentially motivate a shooter to target this area. The shooter will know that no one besides law enforcement and or security can stop them, because concealed carry isn’t allowed at the location. Meanwhile, if those who have a legal gun permit were allowed to carry, they may be able to stop the criminal and eliminate some, if not all injures that might occur.
