Studies have shown that the prevalence of HIV infection among people with serious chronic mental illness was high. Prevalence rates among patients with mental health hospital or treated as outpatients are between 5% and 23%, compared to a range of 0.3% to 0.4% in the general population in the United States America over comparable periods.
