The report analyzing the internal environment of Halterm and identify its strengths and weaknesses to maintain a profitable business. The functional analysis is divided into 7 parts. 1. Marketing (strength). As Canada’s largest Atlantic coast container terminal operation, it services the needs of domestic and international shipping lines that call at the Port of Halifax by providing the logistical link between the ocean-going vessels and the inland transportation system, and the facility is a full-service operation and provide stevedoring services for ro-ro and break-bulk cargo as well. Its price is in a high category within the coast container terminal industry. Halterm’s promotion aimed at improving customer service and reducing terminal operating costs. 2. Finance/Accounting (strength). Halterm has a good financial situation. Although the debt ratio is increased from 1995 to 1996, the cash coverage is increased. 3. Operation (moderate). Herterm’s operating system is designed to transfer containers directly from the ship to rail. Moreover, Herterm established an EDI system in partnership with CN and several of its large customers. EDI allows Halterm to electronically receive and send cargo information on all rail movements as well as that concerning cargo to be loaded or discharged from ships. However, productivity is not meeting the standards in Europe that considered as a weakness. 4. Human Resource (strength). Halterm has a stable labour relation because many of personnel in the company are long-term employees. 5. Information Systems (strength). No apparent problem. 6. Culture (strength). Halterm aimed at improving customer service and commitment to quality and service. 7. Structure (weakness). Halterm shares are owned equally by NCC and CN, and the management contract is held by NCC.
