Hamlet, to be or not to be is a revenge tragedy play. In all tragedies the hero suffers, and usually dies at the end. Hamlet is the only protagonist in the revenge play who can be considered a hero that is aware of the moral implications. Hamlet is the failure of a man placed in circumstances and faced to deal with them successfully. The play is filled with deception, revenge, free will or fate and a hero suffering and dying

The deception in this play is a destructive one that is practice on others, self-inflicted and is the foundation of the play. As in the play hamlet madness draws attention away from his suspicious activities as he tries to get information and evidence against his uncle the king Claudius. In act one scene five he tells Horatio his deceitful plan to fake his insanity. In act three scene two he stages The Murder of Gonzago to try to catch Claudius with his guilt and again tells Horatio. King Claudius deceives all those around him with his mourning and celebrating. He seems to grieve for the brother that he killed, and works to console all others that may or may not grieve for his brother death, such as his nephew and step-son Hamlet. Claudius also deceives Rosencrantz and Guildenstern about why Hamlet is going to England, telling them that the Hamlet must leave Denmark in the interest of public safety. In truth Claudius plans Hamlet's assassination once he is on England's soil.
