The issue of controversy discussed on HEALTHRE that I have selected for purposes of this paper was first posted by Paul Hughes-Cromwick on September 6, 2006. Mr. Hughes-Cromwick proposed the followed two questions in regards to Healthcare Reform: Regarding healthcare reform in the U.S, what do you think will transpire in the next, e.g., 5 years? What should transpire?
Various ideas were presented in response to these questions. One interesting viewpoint suggested that information technology would be an important factor in the years to come in regards to healthcare reform. According to Elizabeth Seal, posted on September 6, 2006, there will be a substantial increase in computerized ordering as well as computerized charting. A disadvantage of this increase in the use of computerized processes is the increased cost. An advantage of this increase in the use of computerized processes is that there would eventually be less wait time (i.e. information technology eventually leads to shorter process times). Ms. Seal also noted that the inclusion of increased use of computers in the future not only will transpire, but should transpire. I believe her idea on this item, in particular, is viable as the increased usage of information technology becomes such an important attribute in all businesses today. In addition to Ms. Seal's comments, I would also add that the increase in the usage of information technology is basically a "must have" in order for healthcare institutions to remain competitive in its own industry.
Another interesting response, also posted by Ms. Seal, is that there will be a decrease in the number of solo doctors that run their own offices. She noted that these doctors would eventually be bought up by hospitals and other larger groups, thus forcing more competition within the healthcare industry. I believe that this response to the questions posed is also viable as we are seeing a decreasing number of solo doctors
