Hero of the Year

Cyrano de Bergerac, by Edmond Rostand, is written to show the eloquent qualities and grand gestures of Cyrano. Cyrano is a young cadet and poet that put his friends and family before himself. Cyrano is a true hero, because his qualities are bravery, self-sacrifice, and loyalty. He doesn't want to let down his loved ones, so he puts himself in jeopardy for them.

Cyrano shows his loyalty to many of his friends. He fought one hundred men to protect his friend Ligniere. Cyrano says to his audience, "Forward march! I say I'll be the man to-night that sees you home" (Act.I Pg.45). He shows bravery and loyalty when he assures Ligniere and the audience that he will show them the safe way home. He fought off one hundred men that De Guiche sent after Ligniere, yet he asked for nothing in return. He only wanted to see his friend get home safely, which shows that his gesture made him a one-of-a-kind hero.

Not only is Cyrano courageous, he is also one of the best friends a man could have. He worries more about his environment, instead of himself. He shows self-sacrifice when he says, "Let us try what can be done; It is more than you(Christian) deserve" (Act.III Pg.104). He says this in a kind yet demanding way. He was putting his true feelings into poems and allowed Christian to take credit for them. He felt very lifeless afterward, because Roxane had Christian and he had no one. He lived through it, because he knew that it would make others happy.

Many people can tell Cyrano is loyal throughout the book. The book describes Cyrano as loyal when Roxane says, "After fourteen years, late--for the first time!" (Act.5
