How To Change Your Oil
How does your vehicles oil get changed? Do you take it somewhere and just pay for them to do it for you? Did you know that you could do it for yourself for a fraction of the cost? It is actually a very simple process. Now if you don’t like getting dirty or getting on the ground then maybe just going somewhere and paying for it to be done is a better route for you. If you don’t mind the idea of getting dirty and doing manual labor then please continue to read and I will go over the process and materials you will need.
Before we begin the process it is best to gather your materials. Now when you look at oils you are not really sure what kind your vehicle takes there are a couple different ways to look it up. You can look in the vehicle manual for the type and amount needed or even look at the engine itself and it will say it on the oil cap on the top of the engine. My vehicle for example reads 5W-20. You can always google it like with everything these days. You also need to find out the type of oil filter needed.
What is needed:
Oil Filter Wrench
Ratchet or open ended wrench
Oil recycle container
Funnel
New oil filter
New oil
Clean rag
Gloves
First step is to remove the old oil. Now to do this you need to park your vehicle. Put your gloves on and take the oil container and place it under the engine. There is a drain plug on the bottom side, usually towards the rear that looks like a bolt. Place the container under it. Now take your open ended wrench or ratchet and unscrew the bolt. Let the bolt just fall into the container with old oil, it is fine there should be a screen to catch it. Now just take a few minutes and relax and let it drain until the oil stream is almost not even dripping at all. You need to take the oil filter wrench oil and twist off the old oil filter off. That will have oil inside so be very careful when you take it off and put it on the screen of the oil container to drain the oil out.
