Fundamentals of Human Resources Management – Personal Learning Paper
As a student with no work experience, I viewed the field Human Resources Management with a very narrow outlook. My understanding of the field was that it dealt with the functions of recruitment and selection of employees, management of performance, training and development, compensation, and retention. I was unaware of what an important role human resources plays as a strategy architect and business ally.
I was also under the impression that Human Resources department plays a subsidiary role in an organisation, and that it is secondary to other departments such as finance, operations, and marketing. However, after studying this course, I have learnt that not only is HR one of the most important departments in an organization, but also is an essential part of all the other departments. Every department needs HR guidance in order to manage its human capital and utilize it efficiently. I was under that impression that the responsibility of managing the employees of an organisation lies wholly with the HR department. But, through this course I have understood the importance of line managers’ active contribution to the proper management of human talent.
The other major misconception I had was that it is not possible to quantify and measure the contributions that Human Resources makes to an organisation’s growth and success. However, I have now learnt that by the application of analytics, one can measure the impact that HR makes within an organisation.
The various aspects of HR that have been taught in this course such as HR Roles, Competencies, Policy and Philosophy, and the development of HR in India have helped broaden my knowledge of this domain. This course has helped me understand the importance of good HRM within an organisation, and how it can help in the success of any business. It is the quality of the employees that determines the quality of an organisation.
