Names. To some people, names are just what you call a person or place, but in this story names are more than just a way of identifying people and places. Names are used to foreshadow events. The names give clues to what the person is like inside or out. In the following paragraphs, I will take an in-depth analysis of the names and other symbols in this book.
Adam is the main character's name. Adam means first man. His name symbolizes the bible story of Adam and Eve. Adam farmer is looking for his father just as the biblical Adam was. Eve was the troublemaker who got Adam in trouble. Eve is symbolized by Amy.
Amy Hertz. Hertz is more than just a car place. Hertz symbolizes the word hurts. Amy means beloved. So, together Amy Hertz means beloved hurts or my friend hurts. Her friend is Adam and he is hurting.
Adam's mother's name is Louise. Throughout the story, Louise was always very upset with Grey but she didn't lose herself in her anger. She remained a lady throughout her life. Louise means fights with honor and that is what she did.
Adam's real name was Paul. Paul means small and humble. Adam was just that. He was alienated from everyone around him. He was alone and isolated. His whole life was physically and physiologically taken away from him.
The names of places is also significant. He is on his way to Rutterburg, Vermont. Rutterburg symbolizes a rut. He will get stuck in a rut. Rutterburg also symbolizes the hospital because he is stuck in the hospital.
There are many biblical symbols in this story as well. Adam's father, David, testified against the government for corrupt practices. David symbolizes David from the bible. The government is Goliath. David fought Goliath, therefore, David fought the government. Although David killed Goliath but the government "killed" David's old life and he had to get a new one for his own protection.
Adam's psychiatric hospital symbolizes purgatory. Purgatory is the waiting place between Heaven and Hell. At the hospital, Adam is waiting at the hospital before they kill him or until his mind is dead. Another symbol in the hospital is Brint. To Adam, Brint is like God. He even said that he was assuming the role of God. He aids in helping him remember his life. Brint is compared to God in that he is three in one" Thompson, Brint, and Mr. Grey. God is three in one" Father, Son, and Holy Spirit." Thompson runs the Farmer's life just as God would. He protects them from evil and practically made them a totally new life.
There is one more religious symbol: the wind. The wind symbolizes the snake from Adam and Eve. The snake/wind is crawling up his leg and tempting him. The wind also symbolizes freedom. Adam likes the wind because he feels free in it. The wind takes his claustrophobia away. The wind is also like Adam's identity. It moves and changes directions swiftly as Adam does. The wind gives Adam a rush because it pulls him out of his identity.
Another symbol in this story is Pokey the Pig. The pig is what is inside his father's package. He carries that package with him throughout the whole story and makes sure he always has it with him. The package is like his childhood. The pig symbolizes Adam's desire to understand his past life and identity. The pig is a farm animal which symbolizes domestic harmony, something he yearns for. It is his only material family memory that he has left so he keeps it close to him at all times.
