Illegal business ethics
Withholding any net income from the Internal Revenue Service is a crime. The IRS is a United States government agency responsible for collecting taxes and the enforcement of tax laws. Top education official Dr. Danny Harris head of the security ran a car detailing and a home theater business on the side after hours. He hired employees from the agency he worked for while soliciting orders from other subordinates. Dr. Harris broke the law by failing to report any wages from his side business. Also, paying employees under the table is against the law everyone must pay taxes.
Dr. Danny Harris accepts full responsibility for violating the law. He claims that his side business was hobbies and he did not consider them a taxable business. I believe he knew exactly what he was doing when he broke these laws. I’m sure he believed he could get away with taxes from his side business. He wanted to make a quick come up without involving the IRS. He even made business cards and even came up with a business logo.
His gave his testimony before the House oversite and the Government reform committee. Dr. Harris stated that “I take full responsibility for my actions and view my behavior as unacceptable”. Harris was investigated for 12 different violations of the federal law and agency regulations, but was not prosecuted. Although the inspector general filed a criminal report, the Department of justice declined to prosecute him. The Department of justice left it in the hands of the Department of education to take administrative action. The Education department did not find any violations as well saying they qualified his side work as a hobby, which is not an agency violation. The stakeholders were not affected by the violations as Dr. Harris took full responsibility for everything. He walked away from his crime a free man with nothing on his record.
