Immigration Debate

For years the United States has gone back and forth on the topic of illegal immigrants. With the Mexican border at the top of their list, with a the border's total length at 1,951 miles (3,141 km), according to figures given by the International Boundary and Water Commission. It is the most frequently crossed international border in the world, with some 350 million people crossing legally every year. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/U.S.-Mexico_border). With the growing number of illegal immigrants in the US Senators across the country are coming up with their version of the answer to the immigrant problems.

Although each Senator’s made good points I tend to agree with Sen. Dana Rohrabacher and the group of officials that appose the guest worker program. I agree that we need a stronger and more secure border. I do not believe that we should allow illegal immigrants to continue to be here, turning our head to the illegal state in which they entered.

However I in some regards agree with Sen. Dick Durbin that “branding them as criminals” would only scare the immigrants to stay in hiding. As Sen. Dana Rohrabacher said we need to fight against showing amnesty to other Mexicans to enter the US illegally. We need a strong and secure border, with out tying it to a guest worker program.

Perhaps not for the same reasons as any of these Senators it is my belief that we need to find a way to send the illegal immigrants home. At their cost, once they have been returned to their home countries they will be given the same opportunity as any other foreign individual wanting to enter the US for citizenship. I do not believe we should treat these individuals as criminals per say, but what we do need to get the point across that we will not put up with illegal immigration. A point we are not getting across by allowing illegal immigrants to stay on a work
