While there are a lot of issues in this world that cause debate and intense feelings, there is one in particular that is significant to me and my family. Immigration is a long discussed topic and there are more than two sides to the fence. People are for it, people absolutely do not like it and then there are those who put stipulations on their support for it. My dad’s side of the family is originally from Peru. If they had not moved to this country then in essence I would not be here as well. I wish all could adopt the mindset that if it were not for immigrants then basically there would be no United States as well.

I watch the debates on television, see all the committees that have emerged due to this controversial issue and still my family and I stand strong. My grandmother, Olga, is the nicest and most genuine person I have ever met. She always makes people around her feel as comfortable as possible, and always wants to hear about what is going on in people’s life. Most importantly, she makes me feel like I am the greatest person ever. She immigrated in the 1950’s to get away from the civil unrest of Peru. Her family wanted more opportunities than the war ravaged country that they had come from and they found everything and more here. Her siblings and herself all married Americans and had children of their own. They found jobs and were accepted as equals. I cannot imagine the hardships they would have faced but I see the hardships those who still live in third world countries have to go through and know that they do have a way out.

We should be their safe haven. For all the women and children who are looked upon as lesser beings in those countries and for all those who are forced into poverty simply because of their last name, we should be their place of refuge. We argue if they deserve to come here on the basis of resources or some other pretentious reason but while we pay 3 dollars for bottled
