Importance of Relationships

There are several types of relationships, and all of them require a commitment and an understanding between people. There are links of friendship, relationships with family members and relationships in which two people are intimate. Nevertheless of the type of relationship, the longings are similar, to have impeccable unions between all that are connected. However, since we are human, a perfect relationship typically does not exist. When relationships are fragmented there comes a time in which people must decide if it is significant enough to mend. Relationships are vital because they give people a sense of fulfilment, success, and enjoyment.

Relationships are essential due to the fact that it allows people to share comforts and distresses. Also, they provide support each other and develop a sense of teamwork. In “The Book of Joe” written by Jonathan Tropper, the main character had a poor relationship with his father, brother and his fellow classmates throughout high school. After graduation, he moves into the city and becomes an author. The main character lives in an apartment, participates in short term relationships, and his only friend is his publisher. He never realized how lonely he was until he has to return home and revisit his past. He even says that “Loneliness doesn’t exist on any single plane of consciousness” (16).  Most people do not realize just how lonely they really are because it is easy to feel secluded when life is challenging and when they are stressed with certain situations in life.

When sharing outlooks, anxieties, expectations and challenges with others, it helps people stay connected and maintain a healthy level of support. By sharing these things with others people get multiple point of view. Therefore, relationships also help provide people with alternate points of interpretation that can help in objective decision that help further develop social skills. According to Karine Verschueren, relationships develop as soon as middle ages. She states that “In middle childhood, school becomes an increasingly important context for children’s development” (Verschueren 78). This goes to show that we develop relationships as early as middle school that influence our development as children.
