ABSTRACT

With the purpose of providing a carbonizer which can help lessen amount of smoke, this study entitled “Designing, Constructing and Performance Testing of Improvised Rice Hull Carbonizer” was done. This study from done March 5-25,2017 at Cajel, Diffun, Quirino for the construction and at Quirino General High School for the testing.

The performance of the Improvise Rice Hull Carbonizer was tested in terms of: time of burning, initial and final mass (g), appearance of the carbonized rice hull and the quality of smoke.

The result showed that the time of burning the 1000 grams of rice hull was 2535 seconds without using the filter and 2730  seconds of burning using the filter. The result showed that it takes more time in burning when using the filter or the carbonizer. The initial mass of the rice hull was 1000 grams (1kg). The final mass of the rice hull was 900 grams without using the carbonizer/filter. And using the carbonizer/filter, the final mass of the rice hull became 930 grams. And when using the carbonizer in burning, the amount of smoke was reduced and turned the dark smoke into lighter smoke.

Based from the result, it can be concluded that the carbonizer performed slower in terms of time of burning and lessened small amount of rice hull. And it is more effective in reducing amount of smoke.

CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

  1. Background of the Study

Quirino Province is well known for its vast agricultural land. A review of the agricultural sector in the region of Cagayan valley concluded that 21,799 thousand hectares were covered with rice field. On the other hand, disposal of rice hull also known as “ipa” has become a problem especially to millers who dump and burn these along roadside and considered the most unwanted part of it. To think of that 2.5 million tons of rice husk that are being accumulated from 13 M tons of palay during milling are just being thrown away.

Rice hull is the outermost layer covering the rice grain. It is commonly detached during milling and often burnt and turned into a waste. The rice hull is usually yellow in color and weightless that has density of only 0.1 gram. Due to lack of knowledge, farmers often neglect the benefits that this agricultural waste may bring to farmers not only were able to save on fertilizer but also reduce their carbon footprints thus contributing to the global effort of reducing the greenhouse gas in the atmosphere

According to PhilRice, carbonated or carbonized rice hull is made from incomplete or partial burning of rice hull. It is porous and bulky with uniform intact black particles. Also rich in potassium, calcium, magnesium and micronutrients that is extremely important to growing crops. CRH is considered as a habitat for beneficial microorganism. Farmers use it as animal bedding to absorb urine and fresh manure.  Basically, burning a rice hull is what the majority know to utilize it. However, rice hull carbonizer is indeed a need in the production of CRH.

Carbonizer is a container, or an apparatus that is used to reduce or convert a carbon-containing substance to carbon by the process of pyrolysis (partially burning). A typical type of carbonizer produces lot of smoke. That smoke can bring environmental hazards that can lead to many dangerous effects especially to health. However, this research pays attention and tends to eradicate the problem addressed.
