Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl

Moral Values

By Fidel Franco

On this book the tail is about a girl that suffers as being a slave and the worst part is that she didn't even know she has a slave. Linda Brent saw a lot of things while being with Dr. Flint, there for she came to a conclusion thatЁ slavery deadens the moral sense of all involvedЁ. Now I'm not sure if the slaveholders moral was deaden since at that time that was the correct way to act, or I think what she means when she uses the word involved she means the people who are slaves. In any case she thinks that this is a non motivation for people that are in that situation.

In my opinion I think that what doesn't kill you makes you stronger. Sometimes we get more courage and its like a step forward for people to change things. For example in the article about ЁThe Struggles of Women Industrial Workers to Improve Work Conditions in the Progressive EraЁ you can see that women where slaves but with a salary, they had really bad working condition and where underpaid about 25 to 67 percent more than men, but that didn't lower down their moral sense it was mostly the opposite, women had to fight for their right no matter what colour or country they where. If you take a look at this article even Latin women took a position on this with La Resitencia , which was a protest in the Florida area. The main point is that moral comes within even in cases like Linda that was a slave. In that time slaveholders though that slave did not have any morals or be ethical or educated since they where people that where only there to serve and obey .

Now slavery does not diminish your morals why, because in those time slave where consider as asset, object or belonging people did not see or cared what you did because you belong to somebody. Now this could not be all the cases as you could see on the book since Linda Grandmother got her freedom and was a person like everybody else now this is the real questions we can ask in this subject are this . When people where slaves did they have morals?, after they are free do they become moral persona?, or people still consider then immoral or unethical people still because they where slaves before?. This are things that I can not say or specify because I was not there and maybe will never know.

In the book Harriet Jacobs tell us a story about degradation, and sexual exploitation on women over 100 years ago. And in part of the book she says "My story ends with freedomЁЁ. Now on my perspective i see this:

- We still have sexual exploitation and women degradations

- Women where free but they could
