This past autumn quarter I was enrolled in professor George Krempley's course Business Finance 640. The course, Insurance and Risk, offered an introduction to the principles and practices of insurance and risk management, including personal, business, and social viewpoints in regard to insurance for life, health, property, and liability risks. I originally registered for the class because it fulfilled a requirement for my specialization at the time, Finance. I thought the topic of insurance to be practical for real world application. This course proved to be more than just an informational study. Professor Krempley spoke passionately about his experiences within the insurance industry. He presented the course materials in a manner that was interesting and compelling. It was his influence that provoked my further interest in the field of insurance. After the completion of Business Finance 640 I decided to pursue a double major in Finance and Risk Management and Insurance.

I recently completed my second Risk Management and Insurance course, Business Finance 741, Life and Health Risk Management, with professor Bill Rives. The course materials included the management of risks involving health or death; employee benefit programs for corporations, non-profit organizations, and government institutions; the life and health insurance industry. My professor enthusiastically promoted the different areas of concentration within the insurance trade. Speakers from New York Life, Life Equity and Nationwide educated our class on the many opportunities in the field of financial services. Areas such as life insurance sales, health savings accounts and life settlements are a few of the topics discussed that interested me the most. The field of insurance and its subsidiaries are an essential element of financial planning that many overlook. Long-term care, Social Security and Retirement are issues that have recently received greater public interest
