“All languages have grammar and each language has its own grammar. People who speak the same language are able to communicate because they intuitively know the grammar system of that language”. Cited by Beverly Ann Chin, Professor English University of Montana. Grammar skills are useful in every aspect of life. It is widely used in education, social life and even in employment opportunity. In order to communicate and write well, one has to know the grammar of the language. It is vital to be able to express messages for people to understand. Teaching and learning English grammar in school is very important since students need to learn and practice the rules when using the English language. While learning grammar is crucial, some students may feel the subject is burdening or perhaps, tedious. For ages, Some students have been learning English grammar because it is compulsory and is the key to score in exams
A study is carried out to year 5 students to identify the main problems that trouble students in learning English grammar. This study is obtained through questionnaire. There are 30 students whom have been chosen to answer the questionnaire and all of the students are less proficient in English grammar which leads for the students to have difficulties in writing and speaking in English Language. These are very concerning especially when the students graduated and having troubles in finding jobs due to poor English grammar. The students are asked to answer five questions in the questionnaire. The questions are asked to evaluate the students’ level in understanding grammar and how hard do the students think of learning English grammar. Also, the questions are meant to find out how fun and creative the students’ grammar class and the method of learning the subject in the class. Students are also asked about any extra grammar classes.
The study finds that majority of the students have learnt grammar for three years since year 3. Students also think that the hardest part in grammar is to differentiate the meaning and the usage of every tenses. The students have a hard time learning tenses which affects the way of writing and it is hard for the teacher to perceive the meaning and resulting bad marks. The students complain that the learning is tedious and dull. Some even play with friends, sleeping and worst, skipping the class. Thus, students lost concentration during the learning process. Dull atmosphere occur in the class due to the method of the teacher delivers the content which are uncreative and not engaging enough. Furthermore, students are also obstructed from participating in class because of the lack of confidence when speaking since grammar is not fully understand. Most of the students do not enter any extra classes to improve their understanding on English grammar even though there is initiative by the school, conducting a free extra class after school hours.
