Power is defined in many ways depending on the relevance of the word. Mainly power is used as a way of influencing someone to do something that you would otherwise not want to do yourself. This can only happen if and when you are a stronger entity such as having military, economic or religious stature to back up you power. Power consists of many sources that are used as influence towards an objective. According to wikipedia there are powers as a goal of states and leaders, as a measure of influence or control over outcomes, events, actors and issues, as a reflecting victory in conflict and the attainment of security, and finally as a control over resources and capabilities.
First power as a goal for states or leaders it is important to know the objective trying to be meet. As a state or leader you can not always use your power for any and everything. Through using this type of power shows that one area such as the United States can affect or influence other parts of the world to structure there organizations as such to become a more effective and potentially more power nation. This is can also be considered as modeling, which if done right can benefit internally and externally.
Next is power as a measure of influence or control over outcomes, events, actors and issues. For example when a leader such as President Bush takes on an issue like the war on terrorism the U.S. has the power of the military and many other influences that helps other leaders understand that they should follow the right path or suffer sanctions. With this type of power we are able to use it in the right way with the outcome that we are expecting.
Third is power as an attainment of security. Security can be gained through both doing it yourself or by having others come within your country or state and helping you increase your security standards. Security is a main topic just as we are in Iraq and potentially all of the Middle East. The UN and many other powers have come into Iraq to take out old leaders or regimes that have not meeting the standards and replacing it with new ideals and a way of life.
