Question: What are the advantages of using the Internet to conduct preliminary job interview? What problems is a company that uses computer-aided interviewing likely to encounter?

There are several advantages of using the Internet to conduct preliminary job interview. The first advantage is wide net of applicant. Newspapers and company announcement tend to reach only local market, but online applications are available to the whole world. Therefore, there will be more choices available to the company as the number of applicants is increase by casting a wide net. With more options available, it will also increase the possibility of finding the suitable candidate for the position.

The second advantage is convenience and efficiency. Compare with personal interview, internet preliminary interview is more convenience as it is time saving and personal interview is time consuming, especially interview those applicants who are disqualified. Other than that, it is very efficient for the company when applicants submit applications through the Internet, and the company can direct the information to the right person very quickly.

The last advantage is applicant comfort. It benefits the fresh or young graduate students who are lacking of experience in interview. Preliminary internet job interview may reduce much of the tension of the applicant as compare with the personal interview. Fresh graduate or younger applicants are as comfortable by submitting applications over the Internet as they are just filling them out on paper.

However, internet is a good screening tool but it also difficult for applicants to pass. The statement stated in the question is very true. It is tough to persuade the computer as to applicant qualifications; it only cares about the cold hard facts of an applicant’s record.
