Closing of Dadaab Refugee Camp
Deborah Ellis “refugee camps around the world, I met people who were gone. They were still walking around but had lost so much that they were unable to claim any sort of identity. Others I met found who they truly were, and they generally found it through service to others. They became teachers when there was no school, books or pencil.” Kenya is a country located in East Africa and is a neighbor to Somalia. The Somali people have been dealing with a civil war since the 1990’s. Kenya’s refugee camps have provided a shelter for the Somali refugees running from war and hunger. One of the largest refugee camps is Dadaab. The first 90,000 somali refugees arrived in1991,feeling the civil war in Somalia that bagan that year. Kenya and international law Catherine explained the forceful return or refugees to places where their lives would be in danger. Kenya and the international community are excepted to find a good solution for the refugees. The camp is going to be closed because of security issues such as terrorism. The Somali refugees are going to be sent back to War Somalia. The people have real fears of what’s going to happen to them when they go back to Somalia. Some of these fears include there’s no strong government, healthcare, shelter, schools, or even jobs. According to Catherine So, “some told us that they don’t know how they are going to access basic needs such as health services and they fear for their lives” “Al Jazeera News and News Agencies P. 2”. In this paper, there are two important reasons why closing the refugee camp is not in the benefit of Somali people or the Kenyan government.
The first important reason to not close the camp is Somali people have nothing to gain from going back to Somali. It is not safe to go back to Somalia. There is not the government that can provide shelter or meet basic needs such as health services. The athour explain us refugee camp may not be the best place to live in the world but it is good to these poor people. There are sick people in the refugee camps that have a serious illness such as diabetes or blood pressure issues. Catherine told us some types of people are not going to get their health needs or medicine if they go back to Somalia. The people are going back to terrorist groups that control the country and this will cause many young people to run into these terrorist groups.
The second important reason is the Kenyan government can’t just force these people illegally to leave the country without some help to make sure they have safety, security, and shelter in Somalia. The Kenyan country also will be affected once these people leave. The Somalia people contribute to the economy of Kenya. They bring many good things such as “humanitarian aides” or jobs for the Kenyan people to secure the camp. The Kenyan government has a right to protect the country but not the cost of ‘innocent’ poor people that have nothing to gain from going back to Somalia. According the article Kenya Delays Dadaab refugee camp closure by six months, “Kenyan must end the warning to close Dadaab and the UNHCR and donors must press Kenyan to publicly reassure the Somali refugees and them that they are welcome in Kenya until they are able to return home safely” “Al Jazeera News P3”
In summary, Dadaab refugee camp is the largest camp in Kenya. The camp is closing in six months. The Somali people have no place to return because their home country is not safe to return and a refugee camp is a good place for them. The Kenyan government is closing because of terrorism issues but these poor innocent people should not be forced to move to a place that is terrible than the refugee camps. The world and the” humanitarian aides” should come up with a solution to help these people to live a safe and better place that provides shelter, health services, school, and jobs.
