The internet has always been a contentious issue which has raised a lot of debate. Many people feel we cannot live without the internet while there are some who believe that the negative effects of the internet outweigh the benefits. Each group has its reasons why they support or are against the internet.

The internet has made it easy for students to conduct research. The internet contains a vast volume of information. There are many books, articles, journals, newspapers, and websites available the Internet. The internet provides limitless information and students have greatly benefited from all these materials. However, the ease through which this information can be accessed has some shortcomings as well. There is a lot of inappropriate content available on the internet, and while students are conducting research, they may be tempted to log into pornographic sites. Recent studies showed that pornography was the most watched on the internet and most people on the internet were either watching or reading about porn.

The Internet has significantly contributed to e-commerce. Transactions between individuals who are in different continents are now possible because of the Internet. There is online shopping where the buyer does not have to go to the stores physically. The customer orders what he or she wants from the comfort of his home.  The internet has made money transfer to be faster, easier and more convenient.  However, because of hacking, confidential business information is at times leaked. Companies have lost billions of dollars because of Cybercrime. Fraudsters have also filled the internet, and email phishing is on the rise.

The Internet has resulted in the growth of entertainment. It is now easier to download games, videos, movies, and music. However, it is always not safe when downloading from the internet because there are so many viruses. The Internet is the primary source of viruses. Viruses have resulted in the damaging of crucial information, destruction of hard drives and a lot of money is spent cleaning computers that have been infected by viruses.

The Internet has made socialization easy. There are so many social network sites such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram where people share pictures and socialize from different countries. New friendships have formed, people have managed to meet lifelong partners, and a lot of positive relationships have developed. However, snooping has increased, and cyberbullying has been on the rise as well.
