Iyer’s Essay

The United States of America is supposed to be the land of the free. Where you speak your mind. The place where you can be you and you can do whatever you want. No one has more of a right than you. But nothing is for free, everything has a price. As Pico Iyer’s brings it to everyone’s attention that America is not as free as it was made to be in, when her wrote “Where Worlds Collide”.

The purpose of this piece was to show that the “promise land” is not as it is portrayed to be. There is much limited to the common and especially foreigners. Here and around the world only the rich get the luxury. The immigrants don’t get to have the pleasure. It is expensive to live here. Nothing is free. anyone paying that worked in a lower currency area is in bad shape. A piece of pizza “$3.19(18 quetzals, they think in horror, or 35,000 dong.” We as Americans may not think that a slice of pizza is expensive, but when you are here to have вЂ?new life’ your in for a surprise of some serious penny pinching. America is a huge disappointment when your money is nothing here.

America is not the land of the free.

We have regulations everywhere we go. “Do not enter without a ticket”, “ Do not cross yellow lines” , “Do not leave your car unattended”, “Unattended cars are subject to immediate tow away.” There are many things you can’t do. There is laws and punishment for every вЂ?wrong’ action you take. There's a вЂ?right’ way and that’s what they expect out of you. You must be on your best behavior to get by.

America is not enjoyable to live unless you’re rich. You’re
