Techniques of Kerouac's
In "Essentials of Spontaneous Prose," Kerouac implements his style of "blowing" the words onto the paper in an undisturbed manner. Kerouac explains his directions for literary prose in a way that seems like a one-on-one, philosophical conversation. He implements this 'undisturbed flow' by using run-on sentences and using dashes which helps connect the ideas with one another. Kerouac says, "Nothing is muddy that runs in time and to laws of time---Shakespearian stress of dramatic need to speak now in own unalterable way or forever hold tongue--no revisions" (Kerouac 57). It is evident here that Kerouac's ideas are all connected through his run-on sentence structure approach. Kerouac's ideas implement a particular diction and syntax that allows him to sound philosophical.
"Essentials of Road-Tripping" implements Kerouac's undisturbed technique using run-on sentences and dashes to connect thoughts. In "Road Tripping," the usage of Kerouac's style is parallel in the following description, "Best friends usually are efficient as "roadies" as long as one does not find their blabber obnoxious or restraining--18 hour drives are quite demonic if your co-pilot talks of nothingness for the majority of the hours (Examples of blabber include NBC shows "Seinfeld" or "Friends")." The use of connecting "roadies," talking excessively or 'blabber,' and the NBC shows is all streamlined into one long sentence employing dashes just like Kerouac's work. This style also helps creates the more personal, one-on-one approach with run-on sentences that sound like conversation.
Kerouac utilizes italicized words and quotations in "Essentials of Spontaneous Prose" to reiterate the importance of the word (or concept). Kerouac uses blowing in italicized form to give importance to the undisturbed flow as a 'blowing' action. 'Blowing' is also an onomatopoeia (in italicized form) that helps the reader understand the concept of free-flowing writing. He uses this form throughout the piece with runs in time and no revisions that gives extra stress to his free spirited writing style (Kerouac 57). Kerouac even uses these italicized words to employ simplicity. He italicizes blow!--now!---your
