“Beverly Hills will have first Iranian-born mayor in USA” is an article written by Martin Kasindorf. His article was published about one year ago, on March 15, 2007, in USA Today. Although there is much conflict between the United States and Iran, with the growing Iranian community, Jimmy Delshad, an Iranian, was elected mayor of Beverly Hills.
This article briefly informs readers of Jimmy Delshad’s age and life. The article further elaborates on Delshad’s election as the mayor of Beverly Hills. In the article, Delsahd states that although the Persian American community has been weak in the political area, he is an active individual, and was able to win office. Delshad further states “My election tells them [the Iranians] America does not old it against them just because Iran and American don’t have the greatest government-to-government relations.”
I believe that the Kasindorf wrote this article at a perfect approach. Being an Iranian American myself, I am able to see that he has an excellent understanding and awareness of Iranian Americans- for the most part. Although it is true that Beverly Hills is a rather wealthy part of Los Angeles and a majority of Iranians do indeed live there not including myself, it was quite offensive that he assumed all Iranians have that wealth, when in reality there is rather a large number who do not. “An influx of wealthy, well-educated Iranians into celebrity-crammed Beverly Hills.” Although Kasindorf did offend me quite a bit, he did put it into nice words, and it is also understandable that he used the majority of the wealthy stereotypical Iranians to support his article.
