One of the most well known aspects of popular culture is prime-time television drama. Viewers are intrigued by these shows, getting hooked on a particular one and watching every single episode from the attention seeking season premier to the breathtaking finale. What makes a prime time television series successful can be considered in numerous fashions. The most important aspect of a television show is the construction of its characters. The way the actors are designed can ultimately make or break a show. One example of an incredibly successful television show is the WB's "Dawson's Creek." What is so inviting about this show is the unique display of each character and how they differ from one another in so many ways. The character that stands out the most is Joey Potter, played by actress Katie Holmes. Joey Potter is a small town girl with a not so small town life. Her mother died of cancer when she was only thirteen, and not long after her father was jailed for drug possession. Joey is left with her older sister and not to mention, her older sister's African American husband and child. Therefore, Joey is known as the poor girl of Capeside, Massachusetts (the fictional town in which they live.) However, Joey Potter does not let this bother her.
A very mature young woman, Joey strives for success by studying hard and graduating with honors number four in her senior class. She was accepted into the prestigious "Worthington University," a fictional college in Boston, Massachusetts. Joey is a hard-working, independent girl who knows what she wants and goes after it. Off screen, Katie Holmes is very similar. Directly following her seventeenth birthday, she took a leave of absence from high school to move to Los Angeles with her mother. There she auditioned for numerous roles until she landed a part in the movie The Ice Storm and shortly after, her role as Joey Potter on "Dawson's Creek." The character is successfully played by Katie Holmes leading to the incredible success of the show because of the fact that the two are very similar in both mind and spirit.
