Kelp
Kelp is large seaweeds and is classified as Laminariales. Despite their appearance they are not grouped with the normal aquatic or land plants. Kelp is in either the Protista or Chromista kingdom. There are about 30 different kinds of kelp. Kelp grows in underwater forests in clear, shallow, oceans, with nutrient rich water around 20Ð'oC. Kelp offers a protection to some sea creatures, or food for others. It is known for its high growth rate. Some kelp can grow 30 cm per day, totaling over 60 meters long. Kelp is found in ocean waters around the globe wherever water conditions satisfy kelps needs. Kelp favors waters between about 4 and 20 degrees Celsius. Every species has their preference of water temperatures. Clear water is necessary for kelp depend on light for photosynthesis.
Kelp is normally found in 1 and 24 meter deep water below the low tide mark. The tops are often slightly exposed on low tides. Water clarity is very important determining the depth of water a kelp can survive in. Sunlight must also be able to reach the base of the kelp where its holdfast is.
Kelp requires water with a high nutrient content. Water and current movement is also needed to wick nutrients past the plant. Since this is how the plan gets its nutrients it must secure itself firmly to a hard base on the oceans floor.
Kelp provides us with a astonishing view underwater, and coverage for aquatic life. There are many other uses of kelp such as soda ash and thickening agents in food and other consumer products. Kelp will continue to thrive along the coast for decades to come. I strongly urge if you have never seen kelp before to drive out to Monterey Bay Aquarium and see for yourself.
