Luke Ch22 V7-23

h.) Infer and Express why the sacred writing(s) above links to the artwork.

Leonardo Da Vinci encapsulated the story of the Last Supper in his painting. He has the right number of men the Seder meal table is where they are seated, Judas is depicted holding a knife behind his back (stabbing Jesus in the Back), Jesus is shown to be in the middle of blessing and sharing the bread and wine and the apostles are painted in groups earnestly discussing and accusing, about who is the betrayer. No one has ever painted the Last Supper better then Leonardo, (most accurately)

i.) Deduce the artist’s intention. Consider the socio-historical timeframe to justify your response.

The deduction is that Leonardo Da Vinci aspired to accurately and realistically paint the Last Supper according to the scripture. In his painting Leonardo has paid due respect to the socio-economic timeframe. This was done by showing the men simply dressed as working-class men, who in many cases were fishermen, who had been on the road for three years, without any pay and no doubt, wearing out their clothes and become shabbier each day. They did not eat the Seder meal at some opulent restaurant like Fellini’s Main Beach but ate it in a borrowed room, at a trestle table. The table was sparsely laid with just enough food, which of course was tradition then as it is today. Society bad then placed much emphasis on positions of authority, and Leonardo correctly places Jesus in the centre of the gathering as their head with no priests presenting because Jesus did not see them as worthy leaders of the Jewish Society.

j.) Discuss how your chosen artwork made you think about God.

The Last Supper made me think about how God and Jesus’s actions effect the lives of others. The Last Supper shows the portrayal of Jesus and His Disciples and explains using a painting the effect Jesus had on his disciples. Jesus’ Disciples loved him and they were all confused about how someone who has been following him for years stab him in the back (rat him out). In the story it goes to show that even though God had planned for this all to happen, to test his own son with the truth by not telling him someone would betray him until the week of Jesus’ death, shows how much God loves us by offering his own son to us.

f.) Describe the artwork:

A 5-piece serigraph each panel first drawn in black ink then coloured intensely using stencils. (Time Consuming).

g.) Identify one or two sacred writings which can be linked to the images. Write the quotes below and include the reference.

Luke 15: 11-32.

h.) Infer and Express why the sacred writing(s) above links to the artwork.

Each of the 5 sections and images by John August Swanson link to an important message and section of the parable, “The Prodigal Son”. In section one it shows the son leaving his family as he was not given part of his father’s land. In section two it shows the son going into the city of prostitutes. In Section three it shows the son playing poker and doing illegal and incorrect things. In section four it displays the other son working hard for his father’s land. In the finally image it shows the triumphant return of his son.

i.) Deduce the artist’s intention. Consider the socio-historical timeframe to justify your response.

The artist’s intention was certainly to represent in his 5 serigraph the main points of the story, in a realistic context of the socio-historical settings of the time of Christ. In Jewish society, it was very sinful to disrespect your parents – commandment no. 4 Honour thy Father and thy Mother. The younger son disrespected his disgracefully by demanding his inheritance before his father’s death opportunities for travel were very limited in a technologically age 2000 years ago, and to go aboard was a big event. However, to end up in the company of prostitutes was very sinful against the 6th and 9th commandment – Thou shalt not commit adultery and Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour wife, both meaning that the sexual act should be only within marriage. Pigs were regarded in Jewish society
