In this quote, comparison is being used by Yann Martel to explain the difference between the two religions. He does this by using two metaphors (the Ganges river and Toronto) to compare. Hinduism flows placidly like a slow moving river because it is one of the oldest religions in the world and therefore more mature because many people have been practicing it for centuries and are.. The way Hinduism is practiced is different from Christianity because the modes of religious practice are unique from Christianity. People in the Eastern hemisphere where Hinduism is prevalent have a very different lifestyle that is culturally apart from Western worlds.
Christianity is a more active religion and a larger percentage of the world population practice Christianity.

Pi has often doubted or last faith of his own existence, spiritual entity, universal order and global chaos. But even through his doubt and lack of faith, he continues to believe in God and divine existence which will guide him through his future pursuits.

Pi is telling us that animals are better off living at zoos because all their needs are met: security, food, water, shelter, recreation and life without fear of predators. Were they to live in the wild, everyday there was the chance Animals are similar to humans in many ways. We pride ourselves on being more superior than any animals race...yet we seem to have similar wants and needs as animals. We are most comfortable when all our needs are met and when we are satisfied with our surroundings. Like animals, we don't like change and are not accustomed to it.
