The treasury cash manager at Company X was privileged to certain information including but not limited to employee bonuses, company cash flow issues and a few employee wages. This position required confidentiality and trust for obvious reasons. It was the TCM's responsibility to uphold ethical principles and most of all, integrity. The company had pretty good policies on ethical behavior and the consequences were verbal warnings, write ups, and in some cases termination of employment.
The TCM (Treasury Cash Manager) compromised her integrity by disclosing employee wages and bonuses to a co-worker who in turn, shared this information to other employees. This eventually became common knowledge and got back to the Chief Accounting Officer who sought to discipline the Treasury Cash Manager by giving her a verbal warning. I thought this was not handled correctly since it was a rumor at this point. It also went against company policy since the ramification of leaking information was immediate termination. However, no one would come forward and say who they'd heard what from. The CAO just assumed that the TCM must have leaked the information since she was friends with the person who started the rumor and was the only other person with access to the bonus and wage information. Of course, after being disciplined, the TCM became resentful and felt that she'd been unjustly treated since there was no hard evidence of her leaking any information. She confided in me that she'd disclosed the information, which is how I know of it to be true. Nonetheless, she felt that it was unmerited for the CAO to reprimand her for hearsay. Her bitterness at her boss created a very unfriendly work environment. Her morale declined rapidly and she was set on making the work atmosphere uncomfortable as possible by questioning the CAO's judgment, instructions, and character at every opportunity.
