Although it is not designed for diagnostic purposes, after it has been evaluated and tried in several studies, it was concluded that it is an effective and reliable instrument or tool for detecting depression and depressive disorders in university students and nonclinical population.BDI’s usefulness have been supported by several studies on this depression predicting and usefulness to adolescents.
According to Bayran N. 2008. There are found no differences in depression between genders in our study. Similar to the results of, J. Adolesc, 2002. Furthermore research, depressed students are likely to smoke. Research suggests that depressed students don’t drink heavily than a usual student or a college student and students with depression also drink just to get drunk and experience problems related to alcohol abuse, especially women, such as engaging into unsafe sex. It is not surprising to see a depressed student taking street drugs.
Depression is also contributes to the huge factor of suicide ideation. Diagnosis and treatment of depression can greatly help to reduce suicide rates among adolescent and students. In the fall 2009 ACHA-NCHA survey, 6% percent of the students has an ideation of suicide, while 1% of this commits suicide. Suicide is the third leading cause of death of adolescent and teen with age 17-24 years old.

Warning signs of depression can involve friendship and thoughts of the future. Behaviors of a depressed person can be a problem to school learning include loss of motivation and interest, lack of concentration, and sense of worthlessness. Children at different ages may have depression with different behaviors, and they can’t “snap out of it.” Left untreated, depression can lead to poor school performance, bad friendships, and other mental health problems like delinquency, substance abuse or even suicide. Having good and healthy friendship greatly affects growing up. Such as relationships that focuses on positivity and emotional adjustments. Depressed students especially when they show aggressive behavior are more likely to be neglected by their peers and has a higher chance of being bullied by other students. This sample showed the high incidence of depressed female students (52% of female students). This is particular university student group that are affected by depression (Vasques& Blanco, 2006). As discussed, sleep disturbances and depression are highly associated with physiological imbalances. (Field et al, 2006). These imbalances needs to be observed in university students and in future studies. Sleep disturbance is great academic hindrance which will lead to needing further study.
There is perceiving concern for these students who are not taking any cure and treatment. According to further study, in one university there are much more 85% severe causes of depression, and the 84% has a suicidal ideation are not receiving any psychiatric treatment (Garlow et al, 2008).
